Bird Feeding Comprehension Lesson

Comprehension is one of the first skills children learn and they develop this from a really young age; the techniques they work on will go on to form the foundation of any assessment they will then take in school, making this a valuable life skill for them to develop.

This English comprehension lesson uses an extract from the book Birds of the Air by Arabella Buckley as the basis of a series of comprehension exercises. The target age range for this lesson is children aged 10-11, but it can also be used to support other age groups looking to improve their comprehension skills.

In this lesson, they will be asked a series of questions which require them to use information from the text they’ve read to answer. The tasks they are set will get progressively more challenging, starting with simple chart completion and picking out key words before moving on to creating fact sheets, story writing finishing with an extended answer/essay question requiring a balanced answer to show their understanding.
