Description
This lesson is the eighth in our ten-part series on The Tudors.
Elizabethan portraits are an important part of this period in history, and so we will be studying paintings of Queen Elizabeth I throughout her reign to decide what she actually looked like.
This lesson will develop your child’s understanding of how paintings can be used as evidence and the meanings of the symbols contained within them, using sources such as the rainbow portrait as the basis of their analysis.
Your child will study and compare pictures before answering questions on them to show their knowledge and understanding , then design a dress for Elizabeth using the symbols they have learned about to create a powerful image of her.
What symbols would they sew onto her dress?
How can they use these to show her importance and power, even at the end of her reign?
Your child will take on the role of a member of Elizabeth’s government who makes such decisions and explain why they’ve made their choices and what message they hope to get across in doing so.
